  16. learning program to take advantage of the full range of Macintosh® interactive
  17. technology began shipping on May 1, 1991.

  19. Developed by Kenneth D. Butler, Harvard Ph.D., former professor of Japanese at
  20. Yale, program founder and director for ten years of the Inter-University Center
  21. for Japanese Language Studies in Tokyo (administered by Stanford University),
  22. and a pioneer in technologically based language learning methodology, the
  23. CD-ROM HyperCard®/MacroMind Director®-based program is the equivalent of 225
  24. 800K floppies, and features digitized sound, "talking faces" animation,
  25. extensive interactive dialogues, and total "mouse-click" operation.

  27. The focus of the program is on the "structural particle patterns" of spoken
  28. Japanese and on situationally based dialogues with a business slant that use
  29. these patterns.  The materials are organized on a graded basis, with the early
  30. lessons devoted to learning the Hiragana syllabary through animations
  31. demonstrating the stroke order, and to acquiring productive abilitiy in
  32. speaking Japanese in such areas as greetings, introductions, asking and giving
  33. directions, taking a taxi, and telephoning.  The fifteen lessons of the program
  34. present all of the patterns and vocabulary of basic spoken Japanese in easily
  35. acquirable form.

  37. "JapaneseForEveryone provides the foundation for a lifetime of speaking
  38. Japanese," said Butler. "The entire program can be completed in 150 hours, and
  39. if used on a highly intensive basis you can achieve a full competency in
  40. speaking basic Japanese in as little as three weeks.  The program definitely
  41. provides the fastest way to competency in spoken Japanese."

  43. Butler Consulting, Inc. has tracked several of the people who used Japanese
  44. ForEveryone in its final "beta" form.

  46. One person, a Stanford University student, had finished his four years at
  47. Stanford but had not fulfilled the foreign language requirement for graduation.
  48. He came to Tokyo and completed the program in exactly three weeks, then
  49. remained in Japan for six weeks using the ability in spoken Japanese he had
  50. acquired, but with no additional formal study, and then returned to Stanford
  51. and passed Stanford’s spoken Japanese proficiency exam.

  53. Another person, an accountant with Price Waterhouse in Tokyo, purchased a
  54. “beta” disc of the program on December 15, 1990 and used it on a semi-intensive
  55. basis over the Japanese New Year’s holidays, then continued with it after
  56. returning to full-time work after the holidays, and completed the program on
  57. February 15, 1991—-in exactly two months.  He achieved results similar to those
  58. of the Stanford student and has since highly recommended the program to a
  59. number of other foreign business people in Tokyo.

  61. JapaneseForEveryone runs on any Apple® Macintosh computer (except the Portable)
  62. with 2 megabytes of RAM, System 6.0.4 or above, and an AppleCD SC CD-ROM® drive
  63. or equivalent third-party drive with the Apple CD-ROM software Version 2.0 or
  64. later.  It runs specially well on the new Mac Classic.
